The master’s course consists of five topics which are; rules of the road, general navigation, chart navigation, deck general & safety, and the upgrade to master’s deck general & safety. All of the sections together make up 80 hours of in class time and are followed by testing.
Testing consists of four tests which are; rules of the road which is 50 questions and you must achieve a 90% or higher, general navigation which is 20 questions, chart navigation which is 10 questions, and deck general and safety which is 70 questions, all of which you must achieve a 70% or higher.
The master’s license allows you to perform the duties of an OUPV and in addition operate vessels that have been inspected by the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Office and are permitted to carry more than six passengers for hire.

The OUPV license is commonly referred to as a “six pack” license because it allows the holder to take up to six paying passengers and crew on the water. The OUPV license commonly appeals to owners of charter boats with an eight person capacity. We see a lot of charter fisherman and river guides with OUPV licenses.
The upgrade to master’s class consists of one section which is deck general and safety. The section makes up 24 hours of in class time and is followed by a 70 question test on which you must achieve a score of 70% or higher.
The upgrade to master’s class offers the student a chance to upgrade their license from an OUPV to a master’s license. The classes offered by US Captain’s Training are, the OUPV class immediately followed by the upgrade to masters. This format allows the student to achieve an OUPV, Masters or the upgrade to masters if the student already holds an OUPV.
The assistance towing endorsement is a four hour course followed by a 20 question test on which you must achieve a 70% or higher. This course can be taken once the testing for the Masters class is completed and passed. If you engage in towing for hire you will need this endorsement on your license.
The auxiliary sail endorsement is a four hour class followed by a 20 question test on which you must achieve a 70% or higher. This course can be taken once the testing for the Masters class is completed and passed. A master license allows you to take up to six paying passengers sailing, if you need to take more than six paying passengers sailing you need a sailing endorsement on your license.
